GUIDE 04 · Practical service
Use your gifts to serve together.
Connect men through shared skills, useful work and caring for church premises.
The biblical foundation
1 Peter 4:10 · Colossians 3:23–24
God gives different gifts so that his people can serve others. Practical skill and willingness to help are valuable contributions to church life. Caring for premises helps the church welcome people and serve its neighbours.
An example gathering
A suggested monthly session: walk around the building and grounds, agree suitable jobs, work in small teams and finish together over refreshments. Keep a list of ideas that need further planning.
Getting ready
- A coordinator and an agreed task list
- Jobs matched to ability, suitable tools and safe working arrangements
- Agreement with the church about work and any permissions needed
- Specialist work assigned to suitably qualified people
What helps
Include men who want to learn as well as experienced tradespeople. Pair people so skills can be passed on. Finish manageable tasks, record larger ideas for later, and leave the space ready for its next use.
A question for your team
How can our skills help the church care for people and welcome the wider community?
